Read in context

John connects God’s testimony about His Son with the purpose of this section: believers may know that they have eternal life.

Learning goal: Explain the main passage in context, compare its related verses, and identify a faithful response.

1 John 5:9-13 · KJV

1 John 5:9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son.

1 John 5:10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.

1 John 5:11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

1 John 5:12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

1 John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

What these verses teach

Assurance rests in God’s testimony concerning His Son. Feelings fluctuate, but the passage directs attention to where life is found. Read this comfort alongside John’s wider teaching about truth, love, and obedience; a claimed relationship is not an invitation to cherish deliberate falsehood. The focus is confidence in Christ, not endless inspection of whether we have produced a sufficiently strong emotion.

Help me to understand what I’ve just read

In plain language

John points believers to God’s testimony about His Son. The foundation of assurance is Christ, rather than an unchanging emotional state.

An everyday example

On a difficult day, reread what God says about His Son instead of measuring your standing by your mood.

Check it against Scripture

Return to 1 John 5:9-13. Which words support this explanation? Read the full paragraph before drawing a conclusion.

Try saying it back: “This passage teaches me that …” Write one sentence in your own words, then compare it with the passage.

Dig deeper: Scripture alongside Scripture

John 10:27-30 · KJV

John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

John 10:28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

John 10:29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.

John 10:30 I and my Father are one.

Why this connection matters: Jesus describes His sheep as hearing and following Him while emphasizing His protecting power.

Romans 8:1-4 · KJV

Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

Romans 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:

Romans 8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Why this connection matters: Freedom from condemnation is grounded in Christ’s work, with the Spirit’s activity connected to a transformed walk.

Advanced explanation and study

Why does John emphasize God’s witness rather than human opinion? Trace your answer through specific words in the main passage. Then compare the two supporting passages: identify what they clarify and where their immediate settings differ. A shared word alone does not establish an identical meaning; let each paragraph govern its use.

A careful study method

Observe who is speaking, to whom, and why. Separate what the text states from an inference you draw. Note whether you are reading narrative, poetry, teaching, or a promise to a named audience. Explain how your application follows the passage rather than replacing its original meaning. Where faithful Christians differ, describe the question fairly and return to what these verses clearly teach.

Reflect and respond

  1. What does this passage reveal about God’s character or work?
  2. Why does John emphasize God’s witness rather than human opinion?
  3. Which verse challenges or encourages you, and why?

Live what you learn

Write a brief statement of confidence using what this passage says about the Son.

A prayer to begin

Father, anchor my confidence in Thy testimony and lead me in truth.
