Read Together & Discover
Shared reading: Joshua 4:4-8, 20-24 (KJV).
Teacher context / optional fuller reading: Joshua 4:1-9, 19-24 (KJV).
Original learning idea: Remember God's mighty work and pass the story on.
Weekly Memory Verse – Joshua 4:22 (KJV)
Then ye shall let your children know, saying, Israel came over this Jordan on dry land.
Hear the full verse; echo short unchanged phrases. No speed or recitation pressure.
Prepare for the Adventure – Quick Checklist
Read the passage; print W1; check this answer key; try the puzzle.
Memorial: a reminder. Gilgal: Israel's camp after crossing. Pitch in 4:20: set up. Fear God:
reverence, not fear of the stones.
Goals: recognise the main people or idea; solve the Bible activities with support; choose one helpful
response. Read directions aloud, explain words simply, and welcome partner work.
45-Minute Teaching Plan
0-5 Welcome; introduce the picture and a simple optional prayer.
5-12 Read the short KJV selection together; explain story words.
12-22 Play W1 activities 1-2 in pairs. Model one example if needed.
22-25 Quiet stretch or water break; seated participation welcome.
25-33 Play activities 3-4. Let learners point, speak or write.
33-38 Use the short cooperative game on CG2.
38-43 Take turns echoing the exact weekly verse, task 5.

Timing is an estimate.

1 / FOLLOW THE MEMORY STONES
Say: What would help the next generation learn
the story?
Do: Match the panels; describe what the parent
should explain.
Check: Panels 1-3: C, A, B. Carry: vv. 5,8; Gilgal:
v. 20; future teaching: vv. 21-24. Panel 3
imagines that later conversation; picture stones
overlap.
2 / BUILD THE TWELVE-STONE CLUE
Say: Each numbered letter stands for one stone in
our paper puzzle.
Do: Read letters in number order; write the
three-word message.
Check: TELL THE STORY (1-12: T E L L T H E S T O
R Y). Spaces follow 4 and 7. Original activity
message, linked to vv. 21-24; not Scripture.
3 / CHECK THE MEMORIAL FILE
Say: The Bible supplies the count; the drawing is
an illustration.
Do: Use the verses to find the number, place and
crossing clue.
Check: TWELVE (vv. 4,8); GILGAL (v. 20); DRY (v.
22). These are the twelve carried out of Jordan,
not the stones set in Jordan in v. 9.
4 / MAKE A MEMORY MARKER
Say: A reminder helps us tell what God did; it has
no special power.
Do: Choose a reminder and one person you could
tell.
Check: Open response: a paper stone or
bookmark labelled Joshua 4:22; explain that God
dried Jordan for Israel (v. 23). No real stones
needed.
5 / REMEMBER
Say: read the exact W1/CG1 verse.
Do: echo unchanged phrases.
Check: follow the printed KJV words; listening
counts.
PLAY TOGETHER
Write the twelve numbered letter tiles from W1 on
scraps. Partners order them 1-12 and read the
message, then each retells one comic panel.
Check: TELL THE STORY; use activity 1's C-A-B
key. Numbers represent the twelve carried
stones; the message connects to vv. 21-24 and is
not a quotation.
FLEXIBLE LEARNING
For support: Read aloud, pair-read, offer pointing
or a scribe; model one clue. Allow extra time.
Extra challenge, optional: Compare verses 9 and
20. Are the stones set up in the same place?
Answer: No. Verse 9 describes twelve set in the
midst of Jordan; verse 20 describes the twelve
taken out of Jordan and set at Gilgal. Keep those
locations distinct.
SHORT LESSON / HOMESCHOOL
20-minute essentials: welcome 3; reading 5; tasks
1 and 4 for 6; verse 4; recap/prayer 2. Other tasks
optional.
30-60 minutes: add puzzles, game, retelling and
fuller reading; take breaks.
TAKE HOME & CHECK
Show a paper reminder and tell someone why
Israel could cross Jordan on dry land. Read the
memory verse exactly together.
Quick check: How many stones were carried out,
where were they set, and what did they help
people tell?
Optional praise: thank God for today’s learning;
no music needed.
Teacher reflection: Revisit: __________
ACCURACY & CARE
Keep Jordan and the Red sea distinct (v. 23
compares them). Picture 3 is a future teaching
scene. The memorial is a reminder, not an object
to worship or a source of power.
